Student Housing

The Student Housing community is lively and entertaining for the tenants and their families. The housing comes in all shapes and sizes and is tailored for the tenants needs. We emphasize effective use of space, efficiency, sharing and fellowship to make sure the tenants relations are pleasent.
Most of our Student Housing is situated at the University area but we also have housing in Fossvogur, right above Hlemmur bus station and at Lindargata. When the location for Student Housing is decided we emphasize that the housing is near the University of Iceland, that our tenants can walk or bike there or they can reach a bus station nearby. We stress that our shared facilities are cosy and diverting so tenants can get to know each other, meet up and enjoy themselves.
Students registered at the University of Iceland can apply for Student Housing all year round but students starting school next fall semester can apply from the 1st of June.

Allocations rules and rental increase

June 16th the FS board approved a proposal in amendments to the allocation rules, approved by the Student Council.
These changes are concerning priority in family apartments. Until now family size and children’s age have been considered when apartments are assigned, both regarding priority and size of apartments.
That priority will remain, but in addition single parents and couples that both are full time students enjoy priority over a couple where only one is a student.

The rental base in Student Housing will increase by 5.3% on September 1st. The increase is due to higher operating costs and  fees connected to increase in property tax in recent years.

Summer of 2017!

Each semester the Student Housing office reviews each residents credit matters but like the allocation rules state our residents need to finish at least 20 credits each semester.
We do this to guarantee fairness, that students studying full time can enjoy our housing. Our purpose is of course to offer students registered at the University of Iceland fairly priced and nicely situated housing.

When the spring semester exams are finished the makeup examinations start and last until the 23rd of May. Teachers then have some time to review students exams and assignments. That‘s why the credit matters won‘t be available until the summer. That‘s when we go full force! We‘ll talk to all our residents to ascertain who gets their contract renewed and who needs to return their housing in August. This can take some time but at last we‘ll know how many apartments and rooms we can allocate to those on the waiting list.

For that reason we want to remind our newest students, the ones starting next fall, that soon you can apply for Student Housing. 1st of June is the day! Students already registered can apply all year round. We review applications received in May in June (students already registered), June applications in July and so forth.

Enjoy your summer holiday!

Increased rental base: September 1st

The rental base at Student Housing will increase by 5.3% on September 1st. The rental base has not been increased for three years. The increase is due to higher operating costs, especially property tax which has increased considerably in recent years and is collected by the city of Reykjavík.

Prices for rooms/apartments with accessibility for disabled in Oddagarðar will also change. As these rooms/apartments are bigger, price for non disabled living there has been higher but disabled have paid the same amount as residents in regular size rooms. As of September 1st, the price will be the same for all rooms/apartments whether residents are disabled or not.

June applications

Tomorrow we will start the process of going through June applications. We get information from the University's Registration office.
Those who have paid the registration fee will be approved.

We received hundreds of applications in June and we will take the next few days to go over them.
Along with this work, we are working on graduations, credits and renewal of contracts.
That process will lead us to information about how many units (apartments and rooms) will be available for the big allocation.

We assign rooms all year around, as long as units get available each month, but the big one takes place late July and lasts until September.
Therefore we remind everyone to confirm applications each month (between the 1-5. of each month).

Allocation for fall 2014

The student housing allocation for fall 2014 has now begun. It‘s important that applicants accept or reject offers as quickly as possible. Especially those who are not going to accept.

We would also like to ask those who accept offers to follow our instructions and visit our office to sign renting contracts as soon as possible. Doing so will speed up the whole process for everyone.

Finally, Student Housing services would like to point out some changes in the allocation rules. According to the current rules applicants now have two days to accept or reject offers instead of three. In addition rejections now apply to all lists so after three rejections, regardless of the apartment type, applicants drop out of all waiting lists.

Best of luck!

You can sign in on „my pages“ in the right corner of the page and ask for a new password. You need to put in your id-number (kennitala). Current tenants can also ask for a new password on „my pages“.
